DH Shipbuilding Selected for Government Project to Enter US Navy MRO Market

  • Official Selection: DH Shipbuilding has been selected for the MSRA (Master Ship Repair Agreement) support project.

  • Business Expansion: The company is expanding its business from commercial shipbuilding into the US Navy ship MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) market.

DH Shipbuilding is officially entering the US Navy ship MRO market.

On June 5th, the company was selected for the "Global Competitiveness Support Project for Ship MRO." This project is hosted by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and local governments (Gyeongsangnam-do, Busan, Ulsan, and Jeollanam-do).

The MSRA certification that DH Shipbuilding is pursuing is an official qualification issued by the US Navy. It proves a shipyard's capability to repair US Navy ships and is a must-have requirement to bid for US Navy MRO contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

This support project is a national strategy. The government and local authorities will invest a total of 99 billion KRW over five years (2026–2030) to strengthen the MRO competitiveness of Korean shipyards. By obtaining the MSRA and CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification), DH Shipbuilding plans to successfully expand its business beyond standard commercial ships.

Our entry into the naval MRO market holds great strategic value. Currently, naval repair capabilities are mostly concentrated in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongsangnam-do. DH Shipbuilding will now expand this capability to the southwestern region (Jeollanam-do). Since Jeollanam-do has a high concentration of shipbuilding partners, our entry will help build a strong local defense industry ecosystem and support naval defense.

As of 2024, the global naval MRO market is estimated at around 88 trillion KRW. Recently, a significant portion of the US Navy's repair demand in Asia is expected to move to South Korea. This is because the US Navy's maintenance delays have increased the need for trusted allies to take on more MRO work.

A representative from DH Shipbuilding stated: "This selection marks a major shift in our company strategy. While we are currently recognized as a leader in the medium-sized tanker market, we are now adding the defense industry to our portfolio through the MRO business."
