[2025.01.13] DHshipbuilding Obtains “Ammonia Dual-Fuel Vessel Design Approval”

DHshipbuilding Obtains

“Ammonia Dual-Fuel Vessel Design Approval”

DHshipbuilding is advancing the development of eco-friendly ship technologies in line with the global trend toward decarbonization.

On the 13th, DHshipbuilding received Approval in Principle (AIP) from DNV for the conceptual design of a Suezmax crude oil tanker equipped with an ammonia dual-fuel propulsion system. These vessels are designed to operate on both conventional bunker fuel (diesel) and ammonia, making them more environmentally friendly. As ammonia is a carbon-free fuel, it has drawn significant attention from global shipowners as a next-generation green energy source, and research and development in this area continues to expand.

This certification was achieved through a joint development project involving DNV, Panasia, DongSung Finetec, Mokpo National University, and Mokpo Maritime University. Within the project, Panasia developed the fuel supply system, DongSung Finetec was responsible for the fuel storage tank, Mokpo National University conducted ammonia leakage analysis, and Mokpo Maritime University carried out risk assessments. DHshipbuilding oversaw the overall project, including the design of the ammonia fuel supply system and safety measures for potential toxic leaks.

Lee Sang-cheol, Head of DHshipbuilding’s Technical Division, stated:
“Step by step, we will secure technologies for eco-friendly fuel propulsion and energy-saving systems to meet the IMO’s ‘2050 Net Zero’ targets and realize decarbonization in the shipbuilding and marine industries. Through this process, we aim to enhance technological sophistication and cost competitiveness while continuing to strengthen cooperation between industry, academia, and research institutions.”

In addition to this achievement, DHshipbuilding has obtained several other AIPs for eco-friendly dual-fuel vessels. In 2022, the company received approval from the Korean Register (KR) for the conceptual design of an Aframax crude oil tanker using ammonia fuel. For LNG fuel, DHshipbuilding obtained AIP from DNV last October for a shuttle tanker design. In October 2023, the company also secured DNV approval for the design of a Suezmax crude oil tanker powered by methanol.
