Daehan Shipbuilding will be put on the market right away, Chung Dae-sung is expected to increase its corporate value by challenging high-value shipbuilding order

Daehan Shipbuilding will be put on the market right away, Chung Dae-sung is expected to increase its corporate value by challenging high-value shipbuilding order

Chung Dae-sung, representative director of Daehan Shipbuilding, is laying the foundation for his survival.

With the Industrial Bank of Korea (KDB) officially searching for the owner of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Corporation, Chung not only secured jobs but also diversified his business with high-value-added ships, increasing the attractiveness of Daehan Shipbuilding.

An official at Daehan Shipbuilding said yesterday, "We participated in the LNG-propelled LR2 bidding ordered by the French energy company Total."

Daehan Shipbuilding is known to be trying to diversify its business with high-value-added ships because LNG propulsion ships are charged a premium of 10 percent of the ship's construction price. LR2 is a liquid cargo carrier with a net load of 80,000 tons to less than 160,000 tons.

When it was first reported in June that Total was preparing to place an order, the shipbuilding industry said it was unlikely to participate in the bidding of Daehan Shipbuilding.

Korea Shipbuilding is a medium-sized shipbuilding company focusing on Aframax and Suez Max liquid cargo carriers.

On the other hand, it is unusual for Daehan shipbuilding’s participation in the bidding, which is participated three Korean shipbuilders, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Samsung Heavy Industries, as well as large Chinese shipbuilders.

The shipbuilding industry guesses that Chung Dae-sung, representative director of Daehan shipbuilding, decided to participate in the project after gaining confidence in the technology of Korea Shipbuilding.

Chung proved the technological capabilities of Daehan Shipbuilding by winning orders for up to three shuttle tankers in July.

The shuttle tanker is a special-purpose ship that ships crude oil from marine equipment to land storage bases.

In addition to the crude oil storage space, a BLS must be installed at the bow, and a DPS must be installed to maintain a certain position without being affected by currents or waves. As a result, shuttle tankers are more expensive than existing liquid cargo carriers and are considered high-cost additional ships.

Chung's successive bid for high-value-added ships is expected to further enhance the value of Daehan Shipbuilding.

The shipbuilding industry expects Shinhan Heavy Industries, a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Corporation, to start legal management in July, and the Industrial Bank of Korea (KDB) will seek new owners ahead of the sale of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Corporation.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings, the holding company of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, announced at a performance briefing in the second quarter, "We will complete the acquisition of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine by the end of this year."

Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Corporation has decided not to buy Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Corporation's subsidiaries.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Corporation is also the largest shareholder with a 65.06 percent stake in Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Corporation.

Under the Chung administration, Daehan Shipbuilding has been working for two years. This is the result of the global mid-sized shipbuilding industry's poor performance due to the spread of Corona 19, which is a positive factor in Korea Shipbuilding's competitiveness.

According to a report released by the Export-Import Bank of Korea's Overseas Economic Research Institute, 2.44 million CGT (standard cargo ship conversion tonnage) was ordered in the first half of 2020. This is down 65.0 percent from the same period last year.

If Chung continues to secure jobs and expand orders to high-added-value ships, the attractiveness of Daehan shipbuilding will increase.

In particular, Korea Shipbuilding is confident that it has patented technology for LNG propulsion ships.

Since Daehan Shipbuilding signed a memorandum of understanding on the construction of an LNG carrier with this technology in 2014, Chung is unlikely to win the LNG-propelled ship order.

An official at Daehan Shipbuilding said, "Korea Shipbuilding is building its survival base and establishing a new vision to improve its competitiveness. We are trying to secure professional manpower by forming a task force to diversify our business and develop new ships."
