Daehan Shipbuilding begins development of ammonia fuel-propelled ship technology

Daehan Shipbuilding (CEO Jeong Dae-sung) has begun to secure future technology capabilities by developing next-generation eco-vessels that use clean fuels (alternative fuels, ammonia, and hydrogen) to keep up the era of decarbonization.

Daehan Shipbuilding signed an "MOU for the Joint Development of Ammonia Fuel Propulsion Ship Technology" with Mokpo National Maritime University, KR, and MAN Energy Solution in the morning and LR in the afternoon.

At the MOU on this day, the four companies decided to carry out a cooperation project for the optimal design and joint technology development of 115K grade ammonia fuel vessels for three years until 2024 and to cooperate and develop participating organizations.

Daehan Shipbuilding plans to complete the main design of the 115K ammonia-propelled ship by the second half of this year and obtain basic certification (AIP) from the KR and LR. The safety review (HAZID) for the main design will be supported by the Lloyd class. After that, we plan to actively cooperate with the development of the ammonia dual-fuel propulsion engine promoted by MAN Energy Solution.

On the other hand, ammonia-propelled vessels and hydrogen-fueled vessels, which emit little carbon, are attracting attention as eco-friendly vessels following LNG-propelled vessels. Ammonia a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen is economical and safe to supply because it does not emit carbon dioxide at all when burned. Furthermore, they meet IMO regulation, which requires that carbon dioxide emissions be reduced to 70 percent by 2050. So shipowner’s attention is more increasing.

Lee Kyung-Seok, technical director of Daehan Shipbuilding, said, "We will continue to develop eco-friendly ships (neutral carbon fuel and energy-saving device) to meet customers' needs."
