Daehan Shipbuilding diversify its ship type by obtaining an order of 7200 TEU container

Daehan Shipbuilding succeeded in getting a medium-sized class of container ships orders for the first time since its foundation.

Daehan Shipbuilding said it signed a contract with a European ship company in April to build four 7 200TEU container ships. The ship will begin production in April 2023 and be delivered one after another from April 2024.

Daehan Shipbuilding, which used to build Aframax tankers, won orders for shuttle tankers in 2020 and LNG dual-fuel propulsion ships in 2021 and even won orders for medium-sized container ships, proving its competitiveness.

The 7,200 TEU container ship that Daehan Shipbuilding signed this time is a ship that can transport 7,200 container boxes (1 TEU is one 20FT container unit) and is 272m long, 42.8m wide, and 24.6m high. It is also an eco-friendly container carrier designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with energy savings.

Daehan Shipbuilding has continued to develop its flagship to actively cope with the business situation. The 7,200 TEU container ship, which was ordered this time, is the next-generation flagship ship that is most suitable for Daehan Shipbuilding's production environment, and it completed development in December.

The order, which took place three months after the completion of the development, is the result of Daehan Shipbuilding's constant efforts to maintain its competitiveness in the shipping market, which changes frequently.

The container ship market has been booming since last year. According to Clarkson’s data, container ship orders increased 4.8 times (119 ships → 577 ships) in 2021 compared to 2020. Demand for container ships exploded due to a surge in demand for consumer goods, charter fees are breaking a record high and this trend will be leading until this year. In addition, the price of container ships is expected to remain high for the time being.

Tradewins, a shipbuilding media, said in January, "Neo-Panamax's container ship, including 7,000 TEU, is expected to be in high demand in the future as it can be replaced by all-weather linear ships that can be put on the Far East-Central Asia route as well as the Fall East route."

As inquiries about the new 7,000 TEU container ship are continuing from major shipping companies around the world, Daehan Shipbuilding plans to try to hold a dominant position in mid-sized container market starting with this order.

Chung Dae-Sung, CEO of Daehan Shipbuilding, said, "Through this container ship order, we have laid the foundation for strategic selection orders according to the market conditions of each ship. We will quickly complete the technology development of LNG dual fuel-powered container ships in line with stricter environmental regulations."
