Daehan Shipbuilding is picking up the pace in eco-friendly shipbuilding, having obtained the Approval in Principle (AIP) for a Suezmax tanker utilizing methanol as a dual-fuel propulsion system from the Norwegian classification society DNV.

On the 22nd of last month, Daehan Shipbuilding announced that it had obtained the Approval in Principle (AIP) for a Suezmax tanker utilizing methanol as a dual-fuel propulsion system from the Norwegian classification society DNV.

Methanol-fueled ships are designed to comply with the strengthening greenhouse gas regulations (Net Zero target for 2050) and Daehan Shipbuilding independently designed systems related to methanol fuel supply, storage, and supply, collaborating with Sunbo Industries for the skid drawings and process analysis.

Methanol fuel is a low-carbon fuel capable of meeting the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) greenhouse gas long-term strategies.

Furthermore, green methanol, synthesized from green hydrogen obtained through solar and wind power, as well as captured carbon dioxide, is gaining attention as a carbon-neutral fuel.

Daehan Shipbuilding is conducting technical verification of methanol fuel tanks in collaboration with DNV and Mokpo National University's Maritime Cable Technology Research Center. They have applied rectangular fuel storage tanks with special coatings made of carbon materials instead of expensive stainless steel to withstand even strong fuels.

In addition, they are accelerating their efforts in technology development to secure price competitiveness.

Bong-Woon Park, Technical Director of Daehan Shipbuilding, stated during the certification ceremony, "Following the methanol-fueled container ship in July this year, we are strengthening our technological competitiveness in eco-friendly propulsion technology for our mainstay tanker ships by obtaining AIP for methanol dual-fuel propulsion system supply systems.

We will gradually implement key technologies such as eco-friendly propulsion fuels (ammonia) and carbon capture storage systems to achieve the '2050 Net Zero' proposed by IMO. We will also strengthen collaboration with regional universities and research institutions to flexibly address the limitations of our technical workforce in mid-sized shipyards."
